Melchior Ndadaye
Ethnic tensions in Rwanda were heightened in October 1993
upon the assassination of Melchior Ndadaye, the first popularly elected Hutu
president of neighboring Burundi.
A ceasefire was achieved in 1993,
followed by UN-backed efforts to negotiate a new multi-party constitution; Hutu leaders and extremists opposed any Tutsi involvement in
the government. The Hutu exterminators made other Hutus kill their own neighbors. The Rwanda Patriotic Front or RPF for short, ended the genocide by forcing two million Hutus to flee to nearby countries such as the
Democratic Republic of Congo. Paul Kagame is the current president of Rwanda. His efforts as being the head of the RPF helped stop the genocide committed by the Hutus.
